Artist Statement:

My practice of making paintings comes from my own powerful experience with various landscapes and my in interest in the way that images, in their constant accessibility, struggle to convey information.  I use questions about how the subjective vision we use to apprehend any phenomenon is traded for the skill of reading an image, and then merely recognizing an image as a starting point for making new pictures.  I am interested in how paintings might simultaneously be photographic and without reference, and how landscapes might be both familiar and unknowable.  My hope is to undermine the legibility or know-ability of these images, which in turn may open them up widely for a viewer’s experience.
